In general, provision has not been made in the Japanese literature area for authors with names beginning with L because there are no genuine Japanese names that begin with that letter. An exception was made in the case of PL832.5 in order to accommodate a Chinese author whose name begins with L and who writes in Japanese.

We will make a similar exception and establish a number at PL855.5 to accommodate the author Noriko Mizuta Lippit, who is a Japanese author with a non-Japanese surname.

What procedure should be followed to assign a call number for authors whose
names begin with L in the PL schedule for Japanese Literature? In
particular, for the Showa period, 1945-1989. The schedule (PL821-866) has
an L designation for the preceding period (i.e., Showa period 1926-1945) but
none exists for PL844-866 (Showa period, 1945-1989). For that matter, there
is no L designation for the subsequent period PL867-878 (Heisei period,
1989-) either.
