LC's instructions on this are found in the Subject Cataloging Manual: Classification, F320, the last paragraph: "Assign the class number that corresponds to the imprint date of the edition being cataloged even if this results in the work being separated from its other editions."

Classification numbers for Bible commentaries are determined by date (Early
through 1950, 1951-2000, 2001- ). If the first edition of a commentary
was published in 1919 and the second edition was published in 1967, should
the two editions receive different classification numbers? Or should the
second edition receive the same classification number as the first edition
with 1967 added after the Cutter number? In the LC online catalog there
seem to be examples of both.
